The way that people interact with, and reflect upon, their environments are crucial to Olafur Eliasson’s work. Whether we be looking into a waterfall or staring at the sun, Eliasson encourages us to participate with his creations; we are central to their existence. His latest collaboration with Mekanism Skateboards called ‘Your mercury ocean’ (2009), is no different.

Olafur Eliasson’s skateboard is not an average deck. To create the rippled effect, the artist milled the top and the bottom of the 13 ply board (skateboards are normally seven ply) at different levels. The deck was then coated in a mirror layer, resulting in a watery wave that fractures light as it rolls. As the rider moves, the deck reflects every turn, forcing us to think about “what we are seeing, but also how we see it”.  ‘Your mercury ocean’ (2009) provides a new perspective and different reflection for the rider about his relation to the world.
