Installation Diary | Part 2
The initial installation phase of ‘360° room for all colours’ (2002)
The start of another busy week! MCA’s Install Coordinator, Tony Mighell, posts his behind the scenes diary for Take your time: Olafur Eliasson.
The team from Studio Olafur Eliasson arrived this morning and so the install can now really start. The team started work on ‘Soil quasi brick corridor’ (2003), working out the fabric ceiling and getting started on construction. The brick tiles will be installed after that’s complete tomorrow morning. We part-opened the crates containing the brick panels to verify their weight — boy are they heavy! It is a huge weight for the walls to support, but they were constructed with this in mind and we are confident they are sufficiently strong.
We started ‘360° room for all colours’ (2002) with the frame unpacked, assembled and then positioned in the reconfigured 307 Gallery. It requires complex technology to dim the lights in imperceptible increments.
‘Sunset kaleidoscope’ (2005) was unpacked and temporarily rested on the window ledge. We had to put a hole in the wall to access the window for this work because everyone is keen to make sure the Opera House can be seen through it when the motor is operating. Initial views today suggest this will work.
The unpacking of ‘One-way colour tunnel’ (2007) also started today. This work will be staged in room 305 while we make sure all the equipment and crates are removed from the northern end of the galleries before it is finally put in place.
‘Moss wall’ (1994) continues to grow…
